Case study

“A lot of the children who go to our Funktion youth group, which is aimed at 9 to 12 year olds, and held on Friday evenings, went to Marrick in August, as well as young people from each of our four churches. It promotes social interaction as computers and mobile phones are not allowed, so it’s good old fashioned fun and games, and the children love it. It’s brilliant to see the children encourage and support each other in the many activities that we do; It encourages altruism, helps to build confidence when they accomplish something, which previously they didn’t think they could do, or were scared to try. Everyone enjoys it, including the adults! The older children, aged 13 plus, are invited to Marrick a day earlier than the main group to enjoy a short trek and an overnight camp at a nearby farm.

Case studyThe catchment areas of the churches, particularly St. Stephen’s and St. John’s incorporate significant areas of deprivation, particularly in the Queenshill, Cranmer Bank and Lingfield estates. Some areas on these estates suffer from poor housing, violent crime and drug abuse, and over 75% of the children coming to Marrick reside on these estates. The majority of these families are living on low income or benefits, which is why additional funding is required. The cost per child is £130, but we charged £50 and subsidised this with fundraising, so that ALL children who wanted to go, could go. “
